Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.
We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.
The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
The couple face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
