An extensive two-month voyage through the Land Down Under was terminated days after the death of an older female passenger who was left behind by the vessel on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the group for a break. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back later that day after the crew discovered the woman was missing.

An extensive rescue mission found her person the following day.

Authorities are investigating the event, together with law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the shipping company said that passengers and staff on the vessel were informed that the rest of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior engine troubles".

Via official communication, he further stated that guests would be issued a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to arrange the travel back of the individuals via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also issued an updated communication, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Master" preventing any further travelers from boarding the liner.

The official said that they would attend the vessel in the Australian city upon its arrival.

The vessel first departed the Australian port on October 24th, and was just two days into the expedition at the point of the senior passenger's death. The remote island was the opening port on the journey.

Travelers on the ship - who usually pay large sums of dollars to join the expedition - were taken there for a day trip with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.

The child of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "shocked and distressed that the ship left the location after an planned tour without my mum".

Through her comments, she described her mum as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a participant of a walking group.

"Based on limited facts we have been informed, it looks that there was a lapse of responsibility and common sense," she stated.

She added that she wished the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have performed that might have protected Her existence".

"According to reports from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm period, and mother became unwell on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"She was asked her to return, without accompaniment. Then the boat left, apparently without performing a passenger count.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or shortly after, mother passed away, alone."

Operator Response

Via official communication, the Head affirmed that the company was "working closely with investigators to aid their examination".

He said that the company was "deeply sorry that this has occurred" and had provided its total backing to the family.

Shipping Sector Standards

The liner caters for up to 120 travelers with nearly fifty staff, according to company information. It was specially constructed to reach distant locations of Australia's coast and is equipped with "small boats" - compact vessels used to take passengers on land visits.

Events such as this are rare, and passenger vessels have procedures to track which travelers are embarking or disembarking, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard simply isn't an possibility," a specialist remarked.

Cruise lines consider these methods very seriously and have "clever tech in place to avoid such occurrences from taking place," the authority further stated.

"This is probably a stunning - and tragic - isolated incident."
